Canadians spend over half of their waking hours at work. It is important that workplaces provide a safe environment that promotes overall health and wellbeing.
Potential Benefits of Workplace Wellness Programs:
VON Middlesex-Elgin offers a variety of services that can help improve the health of your workplace:
Heat Stress Monitoring
Heat stress can be a vital concern in a workplace during the hot summer months. Sweltering workplace conditions can leave your valued employees at risk and decrease employee productivity. VON can provide you with an on-call Registered Nurse (RN) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing you to keep your employees healthy and safe during all operational hours when an Occupational Health Nurse would be required. By using a VON nurse, you will decrease overall operating costs while maintaining Health and Safety standards. The on-call VON nurse can be easily contacted in the event of an emergency to provide direction to fellow employees and attend the scene if necessary.
The health, safety and productivity of your employees is of top priority to VON.
Summer is quickly approaching, so contact VON today to learn more!

Employee Flu Immunization Clinics
The flu is extremely contagious and a productivity killer. Hosting a flu immunization clinic at your workplace can help reduce absenteeism and losses in productivity resulting from the flu.

Employee Hepatitis Immunization Clinics
Increased globalization allows us to experience a variety of places throughout the world - sometimes through travel, sometimes within the comfort of our own neighbourhood. Unfortunately this luxury also puts us at risk for various communicable diseases including hepatitis.
Hepatitis is a serious disease that affects the liver. Hepatitis A and B are two variations of the disease that can be avoided by immunization. Often the source of the disease is unclear, making immunization important. It is particularly important for those travelling outside of North America, but is also a concern here in Canada.
Hepatitis A: This form of the disease is contracted through the oral-fecal route and can be contracted anywhere, not just when traveling. It can be transmitted through improper preparation and sanitation of foods, and contact with contaminated surfaces.
Hepatitis B: Is contracted through direct contact with blood and bodily fluid. This may be through sexual contact, dental treatment, manicures, tattooing and while administering first aid.
VON can come to your workplace to administer the vaccination on the prescribed schedule. There are several vaccination options:
- Twinrix — Protects against both Hepatitis A and B
- Havrix — Protects against Hepatitis A only
- EngerixB — Protects against Hepatitis B only

Workplace Wellness Clinics
Often employees are asymptomatic in the early stages of diabetes and heart disease. Our professional staff can come to your workplace and assess your workforce using any or all of the following:
- blood pressure
- blood sugar levels
- blood cholesterol levels
- Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage
- waist circumference
If your employee is found to be at risk, then we can help them on the path to better health, as well as recommend them to a doctor if needed. Together we can decide the best action to improve the health of your workforce through the implementation of healthy workplace initiatives designed specifically for your company.

Employment Assessments
Employees may be at risk for injury because of physical limitations and not even be aware of it. As an employer, you want to make sure that your employees do not injure themselves at work or home, creating stress for themselves and the workplace.
We can provide you with a confidential health assessment of your employee's ability to meet the physical demands for the job. This way you can ensure that you are not putting your employee at unnecessary risk.
Assessments can include but are not limited to:
- Extensive employee history
- Range of motion exercises
- Back fit testing
- Blood pressure and blood sugar check; BMI and body fat calculations
- Visual testing/Colour blindness testing
After the assessment is completed, we provide you with appropriate feedback as to what extent your employee can perform their tasks without divulging personal or sensitive information.

Mask Fit Testing
If your employees require mask fit testing VON can provide a qualified mask fit test instructor to fit your employees as required by government legislation (Occupational Health and Safety Act, O. Reg. 67/93, s. 10.). Our trained staff are authorized to provide your employees with their own certificate of completed training.
After testing is completed, the VON will keep records of when your employees need to be re-tested and will contact you to arrange for an appropriate time.
